Kai Greene and Phil Heath Reunite: Is The Rivalry Now in the Rearview?

In the latest episode of Kai Greene Effect – bodybuilding fans received insight into something they probably never expected to see years ago: Kai Greene and Phil Heath sharing the same conversation without the pressure of a Mr. Olympia stage between them. Host and pro bodybuilder Kai Greene also touched base on Samson Dauda and Nick Walker’s physiques plus his thoughts on the latest upset for Hadi Choopan.

Here’s a brief overview of the topics discussed in this week’s episode:

  • Kai Greene gives perspective on his post-rivalry Phil Heath relationship
  • Is Kai impressed by Samson Dauda’s latest physique update?
  • Kai answers – is Nick Walker over confident?
  • Hadi Choopan fails to secure US visa for Olympia – should he throw in the towel?
  • How bad are round stomachs in bodybuilding?
  • Does Kai think that too many pro cards have diluted the quality of the sport?

You can watch the full episode of Kai Greene Effect above. Keep reading for a more in-depth breakdown of this week’s discussion. Let’s dive in!

Kai Greene & Phil Heath: From Fierce Rivals To Budding Friendship?

Kai Greene vs Phil Heath just may be one of the most iconic rivalries in the history of bodybuilding. So it may have come to a surprise for bodybuilding fans when the two of them sat down together for an Instagram live video and spoke in conversation for over an hour.

Their battles for the Mr. Olympia title became a defining storyline of the sport, with Heath ultimately establishing himself as a seven-time champion while Kai remained one of the most popular and accomplished bodybuilders never to win the Sandow trophy.

Years later, however, the relationship looks very different.

Kai Greene recently reflected on an Instagram Live conversation with Phil Heath that took place as part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the East Coast Mecca gym. Kai described the event as an exciting opportunity to contribute his commentary and collaborate with Heath, Frank Sepe, Steve Weinberger and Bev Francis.

For bodybuilding fans, seeing Kai Greene and Phil Heath working together may seem like mixing “water and oil.” Kai understands that perspective. But from his point of view, the reality was much simpler: he genuinely enjoyed talking with Phil.

What was supposed to be a short conversation eventually lasted more than an hour.

Kai described it as a great conversation and made it clear that the old rivalry is firmly in the past. With both men no longer actively competing, they have the freedom to interact as people rather than competitors. Kai called Heath a “very good guy” and said he believes Phil would say the same about him.

He also had plenty of praise for his former rival, describing Phil Heath as a talented athlete and an amazing star.

Kai Greene Is Impressed by Samson Dauda, Phil Heath Thinks Physique Updates Don’t Matter

The conversation also turned toward the current generation of bodybuilding stars, including Samson Dauda.

When Vlad asked about Dauda’s latest physique, Kai immediately interrupted with an enthusiastic rhetorical question: “Have you seen him?”

Kai clearly has.

He said Samson Dauda looks incredible, particularly considering the massive size he is carrying at more than 300 pounds. Kai’s enthusiasm was unmistakable, and he admitted that, personally, he is very impressed with Dauda.

At the same time, Kai understands Phil Heath’s more skeptical attitude toward physique updates several weeks before the Mr. Olympia. As a seven-time Mr. Olympia champion, Heath knows exactly how difficult it is to arrive on the biggest bodybuilding stage at the right time.

A physique update four weeks before the competition is not necessarily the physique that appears under the Olympia lights. An athlete can improve dramatically, suffer an injury, miss a peak or encounter countless other variables before show day.

Still, Kai believes there is something special about watching athletes such as Dauda emerge.

As an elder statesman of bodybuilding, Kai sees the rise of the next generation as something worth celebrating. Many of today’s young competitors likely grew up with pictures of Kai and Heath on their walls. Rather than approaching young athletes with cynicism, Kai prefers to analyze their physiques with enthusiasm.

For Kai Greene, seeing Samson Dauda reach an extraordinary level is exciting. If Dauda can remain healthy while carrying that kind of size, Kai applauds what he is accomplishing.

Kai Greene Praises Nick Walker’s Physique and Confidence

Nick Walker also received positive attention during the discussion.

Kai Greene said he has been impressed by Walker’s physique, including what he has seen from the bodybuilder following the Tampa Pro. He also appreciates Walker’s confidence, which Kai believes is essential to developing a champion’s mindset.

That confidence does not guarantee victory. Kai agrees with Heath’s broader point that pre-contest physique updates cannot determine who will win the Mr. Olympia.

Anything can happen on show day. An athlete can miss their peak, and even the most talented competitor cannot know with certainty that they will win.

But Kai believes a champion needs an almost delusional level of confidence. Whether that confidence ultimately proves right or wrong is secondary. What matters is having the mindset necessary to push through the demands required to become a champion.

Hadi Choopan’s Olympia Absence Does Not Mean His Career Is Over

The discussion also addressed Hadi Choopan, who will miss the Olympia because of visa problems.

Kai Greene strongly rejected the idea that this means Choopan should retire.

He pointed to Jay Cutler as an example. After Cutler lost the Olympia in 2008 following two consecutive victories, some questioned whether his best days were behind him. Cutler returned in 2009, delivered his famous quad stomp and won the title again.

Kai sees no reason to count Choopan out simply because of setbacks, visa problems or difficulties with placings. In bodybuilding, one chapter does not necessarily define an athlete’s career.

Does Bodybuilding Need Perfectly Flat Stomachs?

The lightning round brought Kai Greene’s perspective on one of bodybuilding’s most debated aesthetic questions: round bellies.

Kai believes aesthetics, balance and overall presentation are fundamental parts of bodybuilding. While judging standards have evolved over the years, he does not believe a pronounced round belly is something a bodybuilder should expect to have and still win a bodybuilding contest.

However, Kai also offered a more compassionate perspective when asked about competitors who step onstage clearly lacking the level of conditioning or muscular development needed to be competitive.

He has seen videos of people competing seemingly as a dare or because they did not understand how difficult bodybuilding competition actually is. Kai does not automatically view that as an insult to the sport.

Instead, he believes context matters.

He recalled seeing a competitor receive snickers after appearing onstage badly out of shape, only to later discover that the person was recovering from cancer and had entered the competition as a personal milestone in their transformation.

For Kai, that changes everything.

Everyone has to start somewhere, and discouraging people from trying to improve could ultimately discourage them from discovering the sport they love.

Will Kai Greene Ever Compete Again?

Perhaps the most anticipated question was whether Kai Greene plans to return to the bodybuilding stage.

His answer was simple: “Not this year.”

But Kai stopped short of saying that his competitive career is permanently over.

He still sees himself as someone who is evolving and growing. Referencing Arnold Schwarzenegger’s famous idea that he would always consider himself a bodybuilder, Kai said he relates strongly to that philosophy.

So while fans may believe he is teasing or simply keeping the door open indefinitely, Kai genuinely does not consider that door completely closed.

Kai Greene on the Growing Number of Pro Cards

Finally, Kai Greene addressed the increasing number of professional bodybuilding cards being awarded.

His response was measured. The sport is different from the version he competed in, but different does not automatically mean bad.

Kai does not believe the increase in pro cards has necessarily lowered the standard or diminished the legitimacy of professional bodybuilding. He may not personally relate to the modern structure in the same way he did to the sport of his era, but he is not worried about its direction.

Wrap Up

That attitude sums up the latest episode of Kai Greene Effect. From reconnecting with Phil Heath to celebrating Samson Dauda and Nick Walker, defending Hadi Choopan’s future and encouraging newcomers, Kai offered a perspective shaped by years at the highest level of bodybuilding.

Most importantly, the conversation showed how much can change when competition is no longer the center of the relationship. The rivalry between Kai Greene and Phil Heath may have defined an era, but today, the two legends can simply appreciate each other as people, athletes and ambassadors of the sport they helped make famous.
