Phil Heath Dismisses Social Media Hype Surrounding Samson Dauda, But Warns He Could Be ‘Extremely Dangerous‘
Phil Heath isn’t putting much stock into Samson Dauda’s latest physique updates ahead of the 2026 Mr. Olympia.
Dauda has continued to generate attention with his massive look as Olympia weekend approaches, but Heath has been around bodybuilding long enough to know that photos and videos taken weeks before a competition don’t necessarily predict what will happen when the athletes finally step on stage.
During a recent interview with Beyond The Stage TV, Heath revealed that people had been sending him videos of Dauda. The seven-time Mr. Olympia champion had a very simple response.
“People were sending me this video. I turned it off. Here’s why. I don’t care. I don’t care. I don’t care…What I care about is Friday, Saturday night.”
That doesn’t mean Heath is dismissing Dauda as a threat. In fact, he believes the opposite could be true. If Dauda can combine his enormous size with truly elite conditioning, Heath believes he could become extremely difficult for anyone in the Men’s Open lineup to defeat.
Phil Heath: ‘What Matters Is What I See Backstage’
Heath’s reluctance to buy into pre-contest hype comes from his own experiences during one of the most dominant runs in bodybuilding history.
“The Gift” captured seven consecutive Mr. Olympia titles from 2011 through 2017. During that stretch, he routinely faced some of the biggest names in the sport, including longtime rival Kai Greene and Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay.
Heath admitted that seeing impressive updates from his rivals could initially get into his head.
“I’ve competed against some incredible bodybuilders in my day,” Heath said. “I used to see pictures and videos of Kai and Ramy and this and that, and I’d be almost shook for a second.”
Eventually, Heath learned to ignore it.
“And then I realized, that doesn’t matter. What matters is what I see backstage, and then I’d be like, okay, it’s on now.”
That experience explains Heath’s reaction to Dauda’s latest updates. An athlete can look enormous or shredded in the right photo or video, but bodybuilding contests are ultimately decided under stage lighting, standing alongside the rest of the field.

While Heath isn’t interested in declaring a winner based on social media updates, he made it clear that Dauda’s current size has his attention.
The question is whether Dauda can bring that same size while achieving the hard conditioning necessary to separate himself from the rest of the Olympia lineup.
“I’m not saying that Samson doesn’t look good,” Heath explained. “I do feel like Samson’s nemesis has always been nailing the hard, shredded conditioning.”
If Dauda solves that problem, Heath believes the rest of the field could be in trouble.
“If he can do that at the size that we’re seeing, it’s going to be extremely difficult for anyone to step up to that.”
Samson Dauda Looks To Regain The Olympia Title
Dauda has already proven that he can reach the top of the Men’s Open division.
“The Nigerian Lion” captured his first Mr. Olympia championship in 2024, defeating Hadi Choopan and Derek Lunsford to claim the Sandow. However, Dauda was unable to successfully defend the title in 2025, falling to fourth place as Lunsford returned to the top of the Olympia podium.
That result makes Dauda one of the biggest wild cards heading into the 2026 contest.
His overall size and shape have never been in question. Instead, much of the conversation surrounding Dauda has centered on whether he can consistently bring the level of conditioning necessary to maximize those strengths against the best bodybuilders in the world.
Heath appears to see the equation similarly.
For now, the seven-time Olympia champion isn’t interested in crowning anyone based on an Instagram video. But if the massive version of Dauda currently generating attention arrives on the Olympia stage with the “hard, shredded conditioning” Heath is looking for, his message to the rest of the field is clear: Samson Dauda could be extremely difficult to beat.
