Sam Sulek Shares His Secrets to Stay Consistent and Build Bigger Arms: ‘Don’t Aim for Perfection’

Bodybuilding star Sam Sulek recently posted a YouTube video in which he shared his secrets to staying consistent at the gym.

Rather than focusing on motivation or chasing perfection, Sulek believes long-term success comes from maintaining momentum and treating fitness as an enjoyable part of daily life. Along the way, he also revealed several arm-training principles he currently relies on during his workouts.

Sam Sulek’s Keys to Consistency in the Gym

For many lifters, consistency becomes difficult when schedules get busy, workouts are missed, or injuries pop up. Sulek argues that these situations should not be viewed as failures.

Sam Sulek Says Don’t Chase Perfection

One of Sulek’s biggest messages was that missing a workout or running into setbacks should not derail an entire fitness journey.

Instead of viewing obstacles as reasons to quit, he believes lifters should simply adjust course and continue moving forward. The goal is to keep momentum alive rather than maintaining a perfect streak.

Maintain Momentum at All Costs

Sulek compared consistency to staying on a well-worn path. If life knocks you off course, the solution is not to overanalyze what happened.

Simply get back to work.

According to Sulek, many people spend too much time dwelling on missed workouts when they would be better served by returning to their routine as quickly as possible.

Treat Training Like an Activity, Not a Chore

Another major point from Sulek was changing the way people think about the gym.

Rather than viewing workouts as difficult tasks that must be completed, he recommends treating training like an enjoyable activity that naturally fits into daily life.

That mindset shift can make it easier to stay consistent over months and years.

Build a Lifestyle You Actually Enjoy

Sulek suggested that training should be something you look forward to rather than something you constantly force yourself to do.

The more enjoyable the process becomes, the easier it is to stay committed even when motivation fluctuates.

Sam Sulek’s Arm Training Principles

Alongside his discussion about consistency, Sulek also broke down several key components of his current arm-training strategy.

Alternate Biceps and Triceps Exercises

Rather than completing all triceps work before moving to biceps, Sulek likes alternating between the two muscle groups.

This approach helps maintain a pump throughout the entire session while keeping both muscle groups actively engaged.

Prioritize the Pump

Sulek repeatedly emphasized the importance of achieving a quality pump.

He noted that many of his best training sessions also happen to produce his best pumps, leading him to believe that muscle swelling and blood flow play an important role in productive workouts.

Don’t Skip Overhead Triceps Extensions

One exercise category Sulek refuses to overlook is overhead triceps work.

He believes the deep stretch achieved during overhead extensions is critical for fully training the triceps and promoting growth.

Hit Every Function of the Triceps

Sulek also explained that triceps training should include multiple movement patterns, including:

  • Heavy pushdowns
  • Overhead extensions
  • Isolation and squeeze-focused movements
  • Dips

By covering multiple angles, he feels lifters can more completely stimulate the muscle.

Use Straps During Certain Curl Variations

During some biceps exercises, Sulek uses lifting straps to reduce grip involvement.

The goal is to place more attention on the connection between the forearm and biceps rather than allowing grip strength to become the limiting factor.

Fuel Workouts With Carbs and Sodium

Nutrition also plays a role in performance.

Sulek explained that consuming adequate carbohydrates and sodium before training, especially during morning workouts, can significantly improve fullness, energy, and gym performance.

Add Cardio After Arm Day

While many bodybuilders separate cardio from lifting, Sulek likes including moderate post-workout cardio after upper-body sessions.

Because arm training is generally less demanding on overall recovery than heavy leg sessions, he views post-workout cardio as an efficient way to increase calorie expenditure without compromising recovery.

Final Thoughts

Sulek’s message throughout the video was surprisingly simple: consistency is less about motivation and more about momentum. Whether it is a missed workout, an injury, or an unexpected life event, he believes the key is avoiding an all-or-nothing mindset.

Combined with a training philosophy centered on quality pumps, strategic exercise selection, and sustainable habits, Sulek continues to build one of the most recognizable physiques in bodybuilding while offering practical advice that everyday gym-goers can apply immediately.
