Samir Bannout Suggests Samson Dauda Appears ‘Fat & Unprofessional’ on Olympia Stage, Disagrees With Lee Haney on Conditioning Standards

Former Mr. Olympia Samir Bannout is not holding back when it comes to the current state of professional bodybuilding. The 1983 champion recently criticized Samson Dauda and Andrew Jacked for their stage presentation, while also challenging fellow bodybuilding legend Lee Haney over his concerns about extreme conditioning.

During an October 31 appearance on The Ress Podcast, Bannout questioned whether some of today’s top competitors are displaying the professionalism expected of a Mr. Olympia champion.

He also suggested that Dauda’s appearance at times can make him look overweight, even when the real issue is a lack of muscle fullness.

Samir Bannout Criticizes Samson Dauda and Andrew Jacked’s Posing

Bannout took particular issue with how Dauda and Jacked perform their front relaxed poses. He believes raising their arms too high takes away from the traditional presentation of a championship physique.

“Andrew Jacked and Samson both did that [raised arms high during front relaxed pose], for me, this is unprofessional, even if the rulebook allows it.”

The former champion argued that bodybuilding remains an art form. He believes competitors must combine muscular development with graceful posing and exceptional conditioning.

Bannout also addressed Dauda’s appearance, explaining how flat muscles can create the impression that a competitor is carrying excess body fat.

“When you’re flat, you appear to look like you are fat.”

He noted that judges evaluate what they see onstage, regardless of whether an athlete’s appearance results from poor conditioning or depleted muscles.

Despite the criticism, Bannout believes Dauda has the tools to reclaim bodybuilding’s biggest title. He suggested relatively small adjustments could have made the difference at the 2026 Mr. Olympia.

“Samson, with some minor modifications, could’ve gotten the $600,000.”

Instead, Nick Walker captured the 2026 Mr. Olympia title, defeating a competitive field that included Dauda and Jacked.

Bannout Disagrees With Lee Haney’s Warning About Extreme Conditioning

Bannout also challenged recent comments from eight-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney, who expressed serious concerns about the direction of professional bodybuilding.

Haney previously called the 2026 Olympia results “total disarray” and warned that rewarding increasingly extreme conditioning could put competitors’ lives at risk.

Bannout sees the issue differently.

He believes athletes should still be expected to arrive exceptionally lean and dry. However, he argues that achieving that appearance does not require dangerous preparation methods.

Bannout specifically pointed to the misuse of diuretics, which can create serious health risks when used improperly.

“The diuretics are still being misused by many of the coaches,” he said.

While Haney wants judges to reconsider the emphasis placed on extreme conditioning, Bannout believes competitors and coaches should focus on safer preparation rather than lowering expectations.

Could Better Posing Decide Future Olympia Titles?

Bannout’s criticism highlights an ongoing debate about what should determine bodybuilding’s biggest championships.

With today’s elite competitors often closely matched in muscularity and size, he believes posing and presentation can separate the winner from the rest of the field.
