Derek Lunsford Warns Men’s Open Division: I Won’t Let a “Dud” Win Mr. Olympia

The “Dark Derek” era continues. During a recent appearance on the Think BIG Bodybuilding podcast, Derek Lunsford declared “I own Mr. Olympia” and made it clear he won’t let a “dud” replace him. The comments have already sparked debate among fans, with many wondering whether the remarks were aimed at rivals such as Samson Dauda, Andrew Jacked, and Hadi Choopan.

Whether fans view the comments as confidence or arrogance, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Lunsford is no longer afraid to stir the pot.

Derek Lunsford Explains What Being Mr. Olympia Means

Lunsford’s comments came during a discussion about what the responsibilities of Mr. Olympia are outside of contest prep and competition.

According to the two-time Mr. Olympia, bodybuilding is a year-round commitment, not just something competitors focus on during prep season. You’re an ambassador for the sport.

“You’re still being a bodybuilder constantly 24/7, 365. A little bit more loose on the training and the diet, but still you’re getting after it to make improvements.”

Lunsford explained that the offseason provides athletes with an opportunity to spend time with family, build businesses, network, and continue helping the sport grow.

He also suggested much of his work for bodybuilding happens behind the scenes.

“I do a lot of things for the sport behind the scenes outside of just traveling, social media, stuff like that.”

The conversation eventually shifted toward his expectations for the role of Mr. Olympia and what he believes the title should represent.

“I Own The Position Of Mr. Olympia”

Lunsford revealed that he modeled much of his approach after former champions he admired growing up.

“I looked up to guys like Jay Cutler, Ronnie Coleman. Those were my idols. They truly carried that torch strong.”

Then came the potential bulletin board material:

“I’ve been doing this for 10 years. I’ve gotten to the point where I now feel that I own the position of Mr. Olympia.”

While some fans may bristle at the statement, Lunsford’s point appeared to be less about ego and more about responsibility. He views the title as something that requires active leadership within bodybuilding, not simply winning a contest once a year.

Derek Lunsford: “I’m Not Going To Allow Somebody To Come In Here And Be A Dud”

As he explained his role as champion, Lunsford made it clear he expects future Mr. Olympias to help move the sport forward.

“I’m doing all the things that are forwarding the sport and I’m not going to allow somebody to come in here and be a dud.”

Lunsford did not mention any specific competitors by name, but fans immediately connected the comment to the current crop of Olympia contenders.

That includes defending Olympia champion Samson Dauda, perennial contender Hadi Choopan, rising superstar Andrew Jacked, and several other athletes hoping to challenge for the Sandow Trophy in 2026.

The statement has already sparked debate throughout bodybuilding social media, with some fans applauding Lunsford for injecting personality into the division while others believe he may have crossed fully into a WWE-style heel.

A Different Derek Lunsford Heading Into Olympia

This isn’t the first time fans have noticed a change in Lunsford’s public persona.

Just a few weeks ago, Generation Iron reported on Andrew Jacked catching strays from Lunsford during a special Olympia training event.

Since reclaiming the Olympia title, he has appeared significantly more confident in interviews and on social media. He has been more willing to discuss rivals, defend his status at the top of the sport, and speak candidly about what separates champions from contenders.

For years, bodybuilding fans have complained that the Men’s Open division lacked the rivalries and verbal sparring that helped build interest during previous eras.

Lunsford seems determined to change that.

Whether his comments motivate rivals like Dauda, Jacked, and Choopan to respond remains to be seen. But if the reigning Mr. Olympia wants more trash talk and more personality in the division, he may have just fired the opening shot.

And with the 2026 Olympia approaching, fans will be watching closely to see who answers back.
