From 1992-1997, Yates did not lose a competition and racked up six-consecutive Olympia titles. Following his final victory on the biggest stage, Yates retired from bodybuilding after suffering different injuries. In retirement, Yates has maintained a shredded physique while sharing his wisdom in the gym.
Yates became known for his insanely wide back, which some call the best of all-time. This is not the only area he was able to max out. Yates has shared great tips across the board for all body parts, including chest.
Dorian Yates Maxes Out Pec Deck
Yates shared that he has been dealing with shoulder and tricep injuries. This has caused him to cut back on pressing movements. To train pecs, he hits the pec deck machine and displayed his insane strength on the movement.
“Rolling back the years with a full stack on the pec deck at @m13gym
Due to my shoulder and triceps injuries, I can’t do pressing movements with any kind of weight so to train my pecs, pec deck is what I do nowadays.”
Dorian Yates has cut back on certain movements but has still found ways to train effectively in all areas. This includes his back, where he has shared different tips for others to follow. Yates has spoken out about the importance of underhand pulldowns rather than standard grip.
Looking at the muscles worked with the underhand lat pulldown, we see it is a great upper body enhancer for multiple groups. The primary muscles targeted are the lats, aiding in that wide physique and great pulling strength. Along with the lats, other muscle groups that see good work are the forearms, biceps, delts, and other back muscles, all working for optimal engagement. Yates always focused on this workout early in the workout rather than late.
Dorian Yates has mastered many exercises and it is clear that he is still lifting heavy, especially to hit his chest.
Variations of Flyes
The chest flye is an exercise that hits the pecs in a big way. This exercise also engages the shouldersand triceps as secondary muscles. Performing dumbbell chest flyes correctly can help improve chest definition, strength, and overall upper body aesthetics, hence the reason they were a favorite exercise of Arnold Schwarzenegger, a seven time Mr. Olympia winner.
- Incline Dumbbell Flyes: Perform on an incline bench to target the upper chest.
- Decline Dumbbell Flyes: Use a decline bench to focus on the lower chest.
- Cable Flyes: Use cable machines for a constant tension alternative to dumbbell flyes.
- Pec Deck Machine: Utilize the pec deck machine for a guided and stable fly motion.
