Jay Cutler and Phil Heath finally got together for a massive chest and triceps session.
The best bodybuilders of all-time continue to train hard in retirement. There are few who do it like Jay Cutler and Phil Heath. The duo has not joined forces for a workout in over a decade but recently got together for a chest and triceps workout.
Cutler was a bodybuilding icon as a 4x Mr. Olympia spanning from 2006-2010 and a 6x runner-up. At 5’9” tall, he’s still considered one of the best bodybuilders and managed an epic rivalry with 8x Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman. Still, he’s managed to stay in fantastic shape well after retirement.

Heath totaled seven Olympia titles over the course of his career. Just like Ronnie and Jay, Phil Heath had an intense rivalry with Kai Greene. In 2020, he stepped on stage for the what seems to be the final time, but has been active in the gym ever since. During the 2020 show, Heath finished third and fans have been waiting for his return ever since. As of now, Heath is tied with Schwarzenegger with seven Olympia victories.
Jay Cutler & Phil Heath’s Chest & Triceps Workout
The duo joined forces for a workout that consisted of five exercises:
- Incline Chest Press Machine
- Vertical Chest Press Machine
- Cable Fly
- Rope Triceps Pushdown
- Tricep Extension Machine
Incline Chest Press Machine
The workout began with the incline chest press machine. The two discussed how important chest was during their careers and Heath believes it turned into one of his best.
“Later on yeah. That’s why I used those different grips. That inner grip.”
Vertical Chest Press Machine
A different variation of a chest press was next. Cutler admitted that he does not perform as many sets on chest day, leading to a quicker workout overall.
“I rest 45-60 seconds in between when I’m not training that heavy. I can do a chest workout in probably 20 minutes. I don’t do as many sets but I still do four variations.”
Cable Fly
The cable fly can be done in many ways. During this session, Jay Cutler positioned the cables right near the top of his head.
“A lot of people have different theories on how we’re going to adjust these. We’re going to do them at probably forehead height. I feel a really good pump right now.”
Rope Triceps Pushdown
The workout went into triceps. This is where the duo reflected on the last time they worked out together.
“We haven’t been in this environment actually with a pump in almost what, 10 years.”
Triceps Extension Machine
The workout ended with the tricep extension machine. Cutler, who admits to being more explosive, discussed partial reps while Heath agreed that the method was beneficial over the course of his career.
“I was always more explosive and I don’t want to call it sloppy training but to trigger thoe certain fibers, I felt like the tempo determines the fibers that you hit. It’s just like doing partials. Is there science to prove partials do anything?,” Cutler said.
“I think they do for certain movements like the different degrees of leg extensions. You can target this part upper, lower, or this part.”
