Stefan Kienzl: You Can’t Buy Your Way To Bodybuilding Success With Drugs | GI Conversation (Part 1)

Stefan Kienzl is concerned with an “I don’t care” attitude surrounding massive steroid doses in bodybuilding’s new era

A new entry into the video series GI Conversation with Stefan Kienzl, hosted by filmmaker Vlad Yudin, made its debut with an insightful and thought-provoking discussion with Stefan Kienzl, one of bodybuilding’s most prominent coaches. Known for his scientific approach and dedication to his athletes, Kienzl has become a cornerstone figure in modern bodybuilding, coaching top-tier competitors like Nathan De Asha, Shaun Clarida, Urs Kalecinski, Wesley Vissers, Martin Fitzwater, and William Bonac. In this episode, Kienzl talks about genetic potential, limitations, and the “I don’t care” attitude towards steroids.

A Legacy of Success: Coaching Olympians

Early in the episode, Vlad Yudin highlighted Stefan Kienzl’s exceptional impact on the bodybuilding industry, noting that 17 athletes under his guidance qualified for the Olympia in 2024, with 15 ultimately competing. Kienzl humbly acknowledged these achievements, attributing them to nearly two decades of hard work and dedication. He emphasized that his coaching career has been marked by 47 pro victories and over 150 top-three finishes, solidifying his reputation as one of the most successful coaches in the sport.

The Journey from Athlete to Coach

Stefan Kienzl’s path to becoming a bodybuilding coach began with his own time as a competitor, a journey he describes as humbling. Despite his passion for the sport, he admitted he was not a standout bodybuilder and eventually transitioned into coaching due to medical reasons. His academic background in medicine provided a solid foundation for his coaching methodology, allowing him to combine scientific principles with practical experience.

Initially, Kienzl became a bodybuilding judge, which further deepened his understanding of the sport. Over time, he transitioned to coaching, finding fulfillment in helping others achieve their potential. His nearly 20-year journey has been fueled by an unwavering passion for bodybuilding and a belief that the effort you put into something eventually comes back to you.

Balancing Genetics and Determination

In discussing the role of genetics in bodybuilding, Stefan Kienzl stressed the importance of understanding one’s limitations. While he firmly believes that bodybuilding is one of the most beautiful sports and is accessible to everyone, he noted that realistic expectations are crucial for long-term success and mental health. He expressed concern over the modern tendency for athletes to pursue fame and success without appreciating the intrinsic value of the sport – calling it an “I don’t care” attitude that often leads to abuse of PEDs.

Kienzl explained that genetics play a significant role in various aspects of bodybuilding, including bone structure, muscle growth potential, and metabolism. However, he emphasized that the psychological qualities of an athlete—such as discipline, resilience, and patience—are equally critical. Without these traits, even the most genetically gifted individual may struggle to achieve sustained success.

With that in mind, Stefan Kienzl also impresses that too many people today think they can “buy” their way into better genetics or better bodybuilding success:

“These days I see a lot of people who really don’t give a shit on if it’s worth it or not and think you can, let’s say, buy genetics or get to the top with several things you do. But that’s sadly, like in every other sport or I would say every field of life, just not possible. You can’t produce a physics professor who is inventing some great stuff. You can’t produce a football world champion. You can’t produce a President of the United States.”

Advocating for Responsible PED Use

When asked about performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), Stefan Kienzl shared a balanced and medically informed perspective. He encouraged athletes to remain natural for as long as possible and to approach PED use with extreme caution. Drawing on his medical background and experience in pathology, Kienzl warned of the long-term health risks associated with irresponsible drug use.

He highlighted the importance of building a strong natural foundation before considering PEDs, explaining that reliance on these substances too early can compromise an athlete’s long-term potential. Kienzl provided a compelling example of a natural athlete who has consistently outperformed enhanced competitors, underscoring the value of hard work, genetics, and strategic training over shortcuts.

Unfortunately, Stefan Kienzl reiterates that we live in a culture of “I don’t care.” However, those individuals who go “all-in” on drugs are actually hurting their potential. Kienzl notes the need to have a good natural base before a bodybuilder can even have a chance to succeed in bodybuilding. These are essential tools that are needed before relying on the power of steroids. And many are skipping this step by jumping into the world of PEDs too soon.

The Rise of Ozempic and Its Role in Bodybuilding

The conversation shifted to the recent popularity of Ozempic, a drug primarily used for weight loss. Stefan Kienzl stated that while Ozempic might benefit individuals struggling with obesity, it has no place in competitive bodybuilding. He questioned why someone with dietary challenges would pursue a sport that demands unwavering dietary discipline and consistency. This perspective reinforced Kienzl’s belief in bodybuilding as a sport of mental and physical mastery, not a quick fix.

Coaching with Integrity and Responsibility

Stefan Kienzl also addressed the ethical responsibilities of a coach, acknowledging the fine line between pushing athletes to achieve their goals and ensuring their health and well-being. He emphasized the importance of transparency, providing clients with all the necessary information to make informed decisions about their training and PED use.

While Kienzl acknowledged that some athletes might disregard the risks in their pursuit of excellence, he stressed that each individual must take ownership of their choices. A coach’s role, in his view, is to provide the tools and knowledge to succeed while respecting the autonomy of their clients.

Wrap Up

The first episode of GI Conversation with Stefan Kienzl provided a fascinating glimpse into the mind of one of bodybuilding’s most respected coaches. Kienzl’s scientific approach, coupled with his passion for the sport, has shaped the careers of many of today’s top athletes.

This episode serves as an inspiring reminder of the dedication and discipline required to excel in bodybuilding, offering valuable insights for athletes, coaches, and fans alike. With Stefan Kienzl at the helm, the series promises to explore the nuances of bodybuilding and the personal stories behind its champions, making it a must-watch for anyone interested in the sport’s past, present, and future.

Stay tuned for future episodes as Vlad Yudin continues to uncover the wisdom and experiences of Stefan Kienzl in the multifaceted world of bodybuilding.
