Lee Labrada and Shawn Ray discussed ways to create a great physique and routine during a workout.
Lee Labrada and Shawn Ray are two bodybuilding legends that saw great success during their careers. The two continue to maintain a high level of fitness in retirement while helping others achieve their goals. They recently teamed up for an upper-body workout and shared different tips about posing.
Labrada saw a long career of battles with Olympia champions such as Lee Haney and Dorian Yates. Once his time on stage was done, Labrada became CEO of “Labrada Nutrition” and helps others become the best version of themselves. He has continued to share his knowledge and that includes what to avoid when lifting.

Ray is known for an incredible career that spanned three decades. He won back-to-back Arnold Classic titles in 1990 and 1991. Ray competed in 13 Mr. Olympia’s between 1988 and 2001, placing as high as second in 1994 and 1996 but never capturing the coveted Sandow trophy. His tenacity and influence, however, secured his legacy as one of bodybuilding’s most iconic figures.
Lee Labrada & Shawn Ray Upper-Body Workout
The workout consisted of seven exercises that the duo hit:
- Vertical Chest Press
- Barbell Curl
- Cable Tricep Pushdown
- Lat Pullover Machine
- Shoulder Press Machine
- Pec Flye Machine
- Flat Bench Ab Crunch
Vertical Chest Press
The first workout of the session was the vertical chest press machine. Both Labrada and Ray made sure to throw in exercises that will hit the upper body entirely. It began with chest and this is where the two discussed their physiques during their careers.
“Shawn always had an amazing physique. He was just one of those guys that used to set the standard.”
Barbell Curl/Cable Tricep Pushdown
The two moved onto barbell curls to target biceps followed by cable tricep pushdowns. This was the arm portion of the exercise and both Labrada and Ray chose these exercises as two of the best.
While both bodybuilders continued to reminisce about their careers, they also touched on today’s era and Ray believes they should go back and target physiques from decades ago.
“The look is everything. I think some of the guys, when they go back 10-20 years like we have, they’ll wish they had a do-over. They’ll wish they put in a little bit more time and effort because I can watch the guys from the 80s and 90s timelessly.”

Lat Pullover Machine
During the workout, both Lee Labrada and Shawn Ray gave advice on how to put together a posing routine and how to make it better. This came during lat pullovers, which they hit both reverse and wide grip.
“When you practice enough, you’ll hear the beat and the body will just follow. You might be in your head and you miss the first cadence or whatever but you can. catch up. The posing is just as important as the breakfast in the morning, as the work in the afternoon.”
Shoulder Press Machine
The workout continued on the shoulder press machine. One major topic of discussion was how to avoid the burnout over the course of the week, month, or even careers. Ray shared that he would not take a day off but would rather re-focus energy.
“That day would become a cardio day because I’m already in my head so I don’t need a day off, I just need to re-charge and recalibrate the type of exercises I’m doing.”

Pec Flye Machine
They decided to hit the pec flye machine rather than use cables this time around. No matter the position or movement used, it is important to focus on the stretch and squeeze during this workout.
“I’ve always said stretch and squeeze. That’s my thing. This is very similar to a cable crossover standing up. That was a staple in my routine the last four weeks.”
