Should Bodybuilders Ice Their Testicles For Improved Testosterone? | GI Podcast

Should bodybuilders ice their testicles? Is Nick Walker overhyped? Does your meal plan rice have mold? Victor Martinez answers all.

In the latest episode of the Generation Iron Podcast, hosts Victor Martinez, Ehsan Farahi, Edwin Mejia Jr., and Vlad Yudin discuss some of the wildest claims made in bodybuilding today. This includes whether or not bodybuilders should ice their testicles to increase testosterone, whether or not Nick Walker deserves the hype, and if leftover rice is killing your diet due to mold.

This week’s podcast episode is a bit of a grab bag of fan questions and wild bodybuilding claims and opinions. The topic of Nick Walker’s physique comes up – does he deserve the hype? Or will the likes of Samson Dauda and Andrew Jacked ultimately overshadow him in the long run?

Victor Martinez also discusses with the GI crew the latest comments made by IFBB Pro head judge Steve Weinberger. Has judging improved? Do the judges truly get it right 99.9% of the time as Steve claims? Some fans have claimed corruption in the past. Victor weighs in.

Victor Martinez also reacts to some rather… wild bodybuilding claims and tactics. A fan asks if icing your testicles can increase testosterone. While another discussed study claims that well kept day-old leftover rice is filled with hidden mold. Should you start dipping your testicles in ice water and throw out rice from your diet? Victor holds nothing back in his responses. Let’s dive in!

Icing Testicles vs. Steroids: Fact or Fiction?

To kick off the podcast, a fan question sparks laughter among the hosts as they delve into the tactic of icing testicles as a testosterone booster. Is this even a technique that any bodybuilders engage in?

Victor Martinez dismisses this notion as a gimmick, he has never heard of icing your testicles to improve testosterone. Nor is he aware of any sort of study or practice that promotes this idea. While ice baths, as a whole, are utilized in bodybuilding and other athletic sports – focus specifically on the male genitalia is simply something he has no knowledge about.

Regardless, even if this is a tactic some bodybuilders or influencers promote, Victor Martinez emphasizes that nothing can match the unparalleled effects of anabolic steroids. While natural methods exist to enhance testosterone levels, gimmicks that claim they can match the results of anabolic steroids “naturally” are all misleading and foolish.

Nick Walker’s Popularity vs. Physique Critique

The GI crew dive into a second fan question – is Nick Walker overrated? The fan specifically asks why Nick Walker gets so much hype and positive attention, considering that, in the fan’s opinion, his legs are sub par and bring down his physique.

The fan goes on to say that they believe fellow competitors such as Andrew Jacked and Samson Dauda have better overall physiques, but are often criticized more directly by the bodybuilding community for smaller weaknesses compared to Nick Walker.

Victor Martinez starts by jokingly acknowledging that this fan simply does not seem to like Nick Walker’s physique. And there is nothing wrong with that. Victor acknowledges the subjectivity inherent in such assessments, attributing Walker’s hype to his exceptional size and youthfulness.

Regardless with how much attention or hype the media and fans give to a particular athlete – when they all step on stage they are judged the same. Nick Walker’s legs have been a weakness for him, which is why he has not yet won a Mr. Olympia competition against the best in the world.

On the flip side, despite this, Nick Walker’s “freak factor” at such a young age garners excitement. Will this hype help motivate Walker to eventually improve and become a deserving Olympia champion? Or will he ultimately fade? Only time will tell.

Ultimately, hype is all a part of the media cycle for bodybuilding as new generations rise up to compete at the top level of the sport. Nick Walker, Andrew Jacked, and Samson Dauda have all made incredible accomplishments already – and there is still much that the future may hold. Only hindsight when we look back on this era will tell us the ultimate impact each of these athletes may have in the pantheon of bodybuilding.

Judging Accuracy in Bodybuilding Competitions

IFBB Pro head judge Steve Weinberger’s assertion that judges’ decisions are 99.9% accurate prompts discussion on the integrity of judging in bodybuilding. Victor Martinez acknowledges improvements in judging standards over recent years. He does agree that as of today, bodybuilding judging is as accurate as a subjective sport can be.

Vlad Yudin floats the question of bribes and corruption among the judges. Has Victor Martinez ever seen corruption or heard of corruption during his time competing in the sport?

Victor Martinez believes that bribes may exist in smaller leagues held in smaller “third world” countries. But he doubts that any major corruption or conspiracy happens in the IFBB Pro. Victor has never heard of any bodybuilder or seen himself bribes being made. Nor have there been any credible claims of corruptions made to the public. So without any evidence, while possible, he assumes bribes and payouts are not happening with the judges in the sport.

This leads to a larger conversation about fan expectations, mob mentality, and bodybuilding results. In this day and age of social media, it is much easier for a popular opinion to take hold and become a wave of criticism. Just because a seeming majority of bodybuilding fans think the judges made the wrong call – doesn’t mean that the fans are right.

Populism can very easily skew perception. If a bodybuilder is popular enough, it can cause the mob of fans to “objectively see” the superiority of the bodybuilder’s physique over others. But this can be simply due to the subjective passion the fans have for that particular athlete. This is why bodybuilding shows are judged by a specific panel of hired individuals rather than left up to fan voting like American Idol.

Debunking Rice Scare Tactics

Addressing concerns over the safety of leftover cooked rice, Victor Martinez dismisses alarmist claims, reassuring listeners of rice’s nutritional value and historical consumption. Despite a study suggesting potential mold development in refrigerated rice (even 24 hours after being cooked and refrigerated), Martinez encourages the bodybuilding community not to fear this staple food.

Rice has always been a massive part of a bodybuilding diet. Chicken and rice is the stereotype of a bodybuilding meal. While fresh rice is always preferred, eating day-old cooked rice has been done by people or decades upon decades. No one is dying from day-old leftover rice. And no bodybuilder is ruining their physique because of it.

Rule of thumb, if you see mold, throw it out. Even if it is just mold in one small part of the food. But if it looks fine and the food isn’t too old, it should be fine to eat.

2024 World’s Strongest Man: How To Watch

There will be no direct live broadcast for the 2024 World’s Strongest Man competition. Fans interested in the action will be able to watch footage from the event this summer in the United Sates. In past years, CBS Sports held pre-recorded broadcast rights of the event – though the network and broadcast date for this year will be confirmed shortly after the 2024 WSM concludes.

Next, it was 2020 WSM champion Oleksii Novikov who was forced to withdraw from the event. The total ran up to five when Shane Flowers and Kristjan Jon Haraldsson pulled out of the event with injuries.

The Stoltman Brothers will return to action looking to make an impact. Tom Stoltman is a two-time World’s Strongest Man champion while Luke is coming off a Europe’s Strongest Man title just two weeks ago.

Last week, Rob Kearney announced that his illustrious career will be coming to an end this year. Kearney officially shared that he plans to retire from competitive action following the 2024 WSM competition.

Hunter Labrada Explores Creatine Benefits & Unveils His 2024 Training Split

Hunter Labrada training split

Hunter Labrada has his sights set on qualifying for the 2024 Mr. Olympia.

In the off-season, Men’s Open bodybuilder Hunter Labrada is fine-tuning his approach in anticipation of the new season. Having secured sixth place at last year’s Olympia, Labrada aims to break into the top five in this year’s contest.

Full Name: Hunter Labrada
Weight Height Date of Birth
235-245 lbs 5’9” 05/17/1992
Profession Era Nationality
Bodybuilder 2010 American

During a recent Q&A on his YouTube channel, Labrada divulged insights from his training regimen. He tackled queries about the benefits of creatine and outlined his training split for the 2024 season. Below, we explore the invaluable advice he imparted.

Labrada Talks Benefits of Creatine

Hunter Labrada thoroughly analyzes the creatine supplement and explains that it has undergone clinical trials and testing, proving its safety and beneficial effects. He also explained that the recommended dosage is 5 grams (1). Anything more than that is like pouring water into a filled cup.

“Once you get that five grams like daily for, I think it’s like two or three weeks, I forget what the study says, you’ll reach a point of saturation. Reaching that point of saturation is going to give you increases in strength. It’s going to give you increase in muscle mass, and it’s going to increase the hydration in your muscles, all of which are good things.”

Nutricost Creatine Overview

Get all of the benefits of micronized creatine without breaking the bank and activate muscle building quickly.

Nutricost Creatine is an excellent creatine product for bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts. It’s affordable and contains all the essential nutrients to enhance workout sessions.

Nutricost is a well-known and reputable creatine supplement brand with quality core ingredients like micronized creatine monohydrate, which makes the body’s ability to absorb it easier. Below are some reasons why athletes choose Nutricost.

  • Nutricost powder can be mixed with any liquid, such as water, beverages, or juice. It’s also conveniently portable.
  • Nutricost Creatine contains 100% creatine, and beyond its physical benefits, studies show that creatine can improve the short-term memory and intelligence of healthy individuals (2).
  • Taking creatine supplements speeds up the recovery process of muscles and tissues post-workout.
  • Taking creatine supplements enhances the strength you need to perform intensive workouts and training sessions.

Hunter Labrada’s Bodybuilding Tips

Hunter Labrada also answers some personal questions about how to train if this is your first prep. He has some advice for natural bodybuilders, too. Here are some of the do’s and don’ts he shares for those in prep season.

Losing Weight While Preserving Muscle

He advises natural builders doing their first prep to stay as lean as possible while preserving muscle tissue. Labrada emphasizes that you lose a couple of pounds when trying to get lean, but at least try to keep it under 10 pounds. Still on the natural bodybuilders, Labrada talks about the importance of recovery when getting lean for a prep:

“Being natural, your recovery is going to be the biggest factor when it comes to getting lean for a prep. If you run yourself ragged in the gym, and you’re doing a ton of cardio, and you’re not eating a lot, your body will not hold up to that so that goes back to just taking your time being able to allow yourself 20 maybe even 24 weeks instead of your typical 14 or 16 like you hear people talking about for bodybuilding preps.”

Body Fat Percentage

Labrada also answers a personal question on whether he measures his body fat or lean muscle. He has this to say:

“I can like brag, I have 3% body fat because if you’re in shape, like truly in shape for bodybuilding, you should just be skin everywhere.”

Foods and Recovery

Hunter Labrada also discusses how certain foods, like white fish, digest well and contain less fat. Bodybuilders should consume them during their prep for best results. He also advises against training through an injury.

“There is no reason on God’s gentle Green Earth to be pushing through an injury. Pushing through an injury is how you make a minor injury a major injury or how you make a minor injury last like five times as long as it would have.”

Labrada’s Current Training Split

Labrada says he’s currently on a four-day-a-week modified push-pull training split. He trains his arms and legs, then takes a day off and two days off after training his legs. Labrada admitted it was hard to do initially but eventually got used to it. He talks about the importance of rest days.

“If you haven’t tried training four days a week or at least giving yourself more rest days, you know, if you’re training seven days a week, stop. Try giving yourself a little bit more rest, and it could do a lot of good for you.”

Hunter Labrada talks about understanding your body and eating right. He says he only eats from two carbohydrate sources: jasmine rice and highly branched dextrin. He has these carbs during his intra and post-workouts.

Labrada advocates using heavy weights and the correct form when building bigger arms.

“One of the biggest drivers of growth is placing as much load as you can on the muscle while still using perfect form to accomplish the reps.”

Hunter shares his plans for the coming 2024 Mr. Olympia competition, saying he wants to qualify first.

“My plan for this year’s Mr. O is to qualify for it first. So, yeah, not one of those people to count their chickens before they hatch. Open bodybuilding is very competitive, and I need to qualify first. So I’m focusing on qualifying first.”

Kevin Levrone Profile & Stats

The Uncrowned Mr. Olympia

Kevin Levrone is one of the most highly recognized bodybuilders of all time. Known for his absolutely massive physique and fantastic conditioning, Kevin Levrone has been long regarded as an “uncrowned” Mr. Olympia winner.

Below is a complete breakdown of Kevin Levrone’s profile, stats, biography, training and diet regimens.

Full Name: Kevin Levrone (Men’s Open Bodybuilder)

Kevin Levrone Biography

kevin levrone biography

Standing at 5’11” and weighing in around 240lbs on stage, Kevin Levrone is an IFBB-certified pro bodybuilder from Baltimore, Maryland. He has won the second most IFBB show titles of all time, behind Ronnie Coleman, with 23 first place finishes. Despite an extremely successful career in bodybuilding spanning almost two decades, he never won the Olympia, leading many fans of the sport to call him “The Uncrowned King.”

Starting off with his personal life, Kevin Levrone lost both of his parents to cancer at a young age. After that, Levrone first took an interest in bodybuilding as a young child. He had an older cousin who was in the military and who inspired him to get into fitness and strength training. He earned his pro card in 1991 at the NPC Finals, and from there it was off to the races.

Levrone began his strong professional IFBB career in 1991 after finishing first in the NPC Finals. He also placed 2nd at the 1992 Mr. Olympia contest, for his first participation, and this was followed by a severe injury in February 1993. Kevin had completely torn his major and minor pectorals while bench-pressing 600 pounds, and the result was that he needed surgery to reattach them. Kevin had ended up undergoing two surgeries, the first one lasted 8 hours, and was to reattach the pectorals. Then while he was healing, Kevin got an infection and he needed a second surgery. It was at this time that everyone thought that Levrone’s career was over, but he only worked harder.

Somehow, he managed to be in contest shape for the 1994 Mr. Olympia only eight weeks later, and placed 3rd, which is remarkable for being post surgery. Kevin had placed 2nd at Mr. Olympia four times, in 1992 and 1995, right on the heels of 6 time Mr. Olympia, Dorian Yates, and then was right on the heels of 8 time Mr. Olympia, Ronnie Coleman in 2000 and 2002.

Levrone never officially retired from bodybuilding and instead gradually distanced himself from the sport. His most recent appearance was on the Mr. Olympia 2016 stage when he was offered a special invitation to compete, and came back like he had never left.

As you can see, Kevin Levrone is a seasoned veteran when it comes to bodybuilding, racking up numerous titles throughout his career.

Training of Kevin Levrone

kevin levrone mr. olympia

Being that Kevin Levrone competed at the professional level, and was a front runner at the Mr. Olympia for a number of years, his training was very intense, and it was fairly unique. For starters, Kevin Levrone trained using a push/pull/legs split, with lower repetitions, often staying in the 6-8 rep range on his working sets. He also trained with a ridiculous amounts of set volume.

Here is what his days would look like:

Monday and Friday: Chest/Shoulders/Triceps (Push Day)

  • Flat barbell bench press- 4 sets of 6-8 reps
  • Incline barbell bench press- 4 sets of 6-8 reps
  • Machine press- 4 sets of 12-15 reps
  • Cable crossovers- 4 sets of 12-15 reps
  • Dumbbell press- 4 sets of 6-8 reps
  • Lateral raises- 4 sets of 12-15 reps
  • Shrugs– 4 sets of 12-15 reps
  • Close grip bench press- 4 sets of 6-8 reps
  • Skull crushers- 4 sets of 6-8 reps

Tuesday and Saturday: Legs and Abs

  • Hack squats- 4 sets of 6-8 reps
  • Leg curls- 4 sets of 6-8 reps
  • Leg press- 4 sets of 12-15 reps
  • Standing calf raises- 4 sets of 12-15 reps
  • Seated calf raises- 4 sets of 12-15 reps
  • Cable crunches- 4 sets of 25 reps
  • Leg raises- 4 sets of 15 reps

Wednesday and Sunday: Back and Biceps (Pull day)

  • Straight-arm cable pulldowns- 4 sets of 6-8 reps
  • T-bar rows- 4 sets of 6-8 reps
  • Bent-over dumbbell rows- 4 sets of 6-8 reps
  • Seated cable rows- 4 sets of 12-15 reps
  • Machine rows- 4 sets of 12-15 reps
  • Incline dumbbell curls- 4 sets of 6-8 reps
  • Dumbbell curls- 4 sets of 6-8 reps
  • Preacher curls- 4 sets of 12-15 reps
  • Cable curls- 4 sets of 12-15 reps

Kevin would often utilize sets till failure on his last working set, and he would only take 1-2 minutes in between sets as a rest period, he also uses a lot of basic exercises.

When Kevin was asked about his favorite and most preferred exercises, his answer was pretty simple and straightforward. Amongst his favorite exercises, he named the big compound movements, which include bench press, bent-over rows, and squats; which are exercises you saw a lot of in the Golden Era, when guys like Arnold Schwarzenegger were dominating the stage.

While Kevin’s favorite exercises may just seem like basic exercises, that’s pretty much what his point is. Levrone believes in the effectiveness of performing basic exercises to derive both strength and hypertrophy gains.

Diet

While training regimens certainly are important to crafting a massive and shredded physique that comes even remotely close to Levrone’s, diet is just as important to progression.

Unsurprisingly, Kevin prefers eating a very strict diet, without cheat meals, hence the reason he came in extremely conditioned and ready to go at each show. He is actually famous for his “growing into a show” tactic which he used when preparing for upcoming competitions, and this is not a very popular tactic in the bodybuilding community. It involves dropping body fat while packing on muscle mass, and is very hard to do. So instead of the standard bulking and cutting routine that usually goes for an entire year, Kevin grew over the several months before the show, but also cut down.

Here is what Kevin would typically eat in a day when getting ready for a show:

  • Meal 1 – 10 egg whites, 2 whole eggs, 1/2 oatmeal
  • Meal 2 – 1 cup cooked rice, 12 oz fish
  • Meal 3 – 1 cup cooked rice, 12 oz chicken breast
  • Meal 4 – 1 cup cooked rice, 12 oz fish
  • Meal 5 – 1 cup cooked rice, 12 oz fish
  • Meal 6 – 12 egg whites (sometimes Steak)

As you can see, there is a good amount of protein, and not an overabundance of carbs and fat, and this is part of the reason he came in so ripped and massive at every show.

Life Outside of Bodybuilding

Kevin Levrone

Since ending his competition career, Levrone enjoys playing other sports like tennis and golf, and he has also acted in several films as well as being a bit of a musician. Levrone released an online training platform in early 2016, naming it TeamLevrone.com. But earlier in 2015, he released a supplement line called, “Kevin Levrone Signature Series”.

The Rise of Nootropics in Pre-Workout Supplements

The Rise of Nootropics in Pre-Workout Supplements

In the world of fitness and performance enhancement, pre-workout supplements have become a staple for many athletes and gym-goers seeking an extra edge during their training sessions. Traditionally, these supplements were formulated to boost energy, enhance endurance, and improve focus. The problem with them is a lot of them rely on just a crazy high dose of caffeine to provide the energy and focus, which leads to crashes and other nasty side effects. However, a recent trend has emerged where pre-workout supplements are incorporating a new class of ingredients known as nootropics.

What are Nootropics?

Nootropics pre-workout

Nootropics, often referred to as “smart drugs” or cognitive enhancers, are substances that are purported to improve cognitive function, memory, creativity, or motivation in healthy individuals. These compounds can range from natural substances like caffeine and L-theanine to synthetic compounds developed specifically for cognitive enhancement, making it much better for you to focus.

The Role of Nootropics in Pre-Workout Supplements

The inclusion of nootropics in pre-workout supplements aims to enhance not only physical performance but also mental acuity and focus during exercise. While traditional pre-workout formulas primarily focus on stimulating the body with ingredients like caffeine and beta-alanine, nootropic-infused supplements target the mind as well. This allows for clean and effective energy, without the sudden crash that a massive amount of caffeine brings.

Common Nootropics Found in Pre-Workout Supplements

Several key nootropic ingredients have gained popularity in pre-workout formulations:

  • Caffeine: Perhaps the most well-known stimulant, caffeine enhances alertness, focus, and energy levels. It’s a staple in many pre-workout supplements due to its ability to increase endurance and delay fatigue.
  • L-Theanine: Often paired with caffeine, L-theanine is an amino acid known for its calming effects. It can help to take the edge off caffeine-induced jitters and promote a more focused and balanced mental state.
  • Creatine: While primarily known for its ability to enhance muscle strength and size, creatine has also been shown to have cognitive benefits. It may improve memory and mental processing speed, making it a valuable addition to pre-workout stacks.
  • N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine (NALT): This amino acid is involved in the production of neurotransmitters like dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. Supplementing with NALT may support mental performance during times of stress or intense exercise.
  • Alpha-GPC: A choline compound that can increase acetylcholine levels in the brain, Alpha-GPC is believed to enhance cognitive function, memory, and focus.
  • Rhodiola Rosea: An adaptogenic herb known for its stress-reducing properties, Rhodiola may improve mental stamina and endurance, making it beneficial for both physical and mental performance.

The Science Behind Nootropics

While some of these nootropics have demonstrated positive effects on cognitive function in research studies, the efficacy of combining them in pre-workout supplements requires further investigation. Individual responses to these compounds can vary, and proper dosing and formulation are crucial to achieving desired results without adverse effects.

Considerations and Caution

As with any supplement, it’s essential to approach nootropic-infused pre-workouts with caution. While many ingredients are generally recognized as safe, interactions with other medications or supplements can occur. Additionally, individual tolerance levels and sensitivities should be considered when experimenting with new formulations.

The Best Nootropic Based Pre-Workout

Nootropic based pre-workout for next level focus and workout pumps!

Now we wouldn’t talk about nootropics in pre-workout without providing you with our favorite option for a pre-workout that has nootropics. That being said, MIND FK™ from MUTANT is our favorite option for this category.

MUTANT is a well known brand that has been a relatively dominant force in the supplement market for some time now, with some serious athletes supporting their brand. That being said, MIND FK™ is something that really is made for the people. MIND FK™ is a bold, newer, nootropic pre-workout to enhance your training experience without the crash and other negative side effects associated with pre-workouts that rely entirely on caffeine. Instead, MIND FK™ is packed with science-backed formula, this supplement brings the slow-burn “flow-state focus” needed to push past failure and get more reps.

Ingredients

mind fk ingredients

Let’s take a look at the ingredients of this awesome pre-workout.

  • Brain Blend: MIND FK™ is packed with choline from two different sources, including VitaCholine®, a supercharged and patented choline. MIND FK™ provides an impressive 1000mg combo of 2 choline sources specifically designed to get you into a foundational amount of this key neuro-nutrient.
  • Physical Performance Blend: Get next-level strength, stamina, endurance, pumps, and energy with efficacious doses of L-CITRULLINE AND BETA-ALANINE.
  • Nootropic Mega Combo: Boost mental clarity and energy with the potent Tyrosine + Taurine nootropic combo, a full 6000mg combined – pretty much hardly ever seen…until now!
  • Blood and Mind Flow: Nitrosigine has been shown to enhance blood flow, allowing for improved physical performance and cognitive function, as you can experience heightened mental clarity and physical endurance. The effects start in as little as 15 minutes and can last for as long as 5 hours, but there is not a hard crash like you get with an overflow of caffeine.
  • Supportive Cognitive Focus: Enfinity® and Paraxanthine are basically caffeine that has mutated into its perfect form. This patented and clinically studied ingredient isolates paraxanthine, the most beneficial and clean metabolite of caffeine from other caffeine metabolites often responsible for the negative side-effects of caffeine, such as crashes, the “cracked-out feeling,” and anxiety. The result is enhanced mental focus, clarity, clean energy, reaction time, mood, and an overall sense of well-being.
  • More: Other clinically studied pre-workout ingredients, including 100% PURE L-citrulline and beta-alanine (plus a bit more), round out the cognitive nootropic benefits of Mutant MIND FK™.

Flavors and Price

MIND FK™ comes in flavors that are refreshing and smooth, rather than just a bunch of candy branding that you see with other pre-workouts. The flavors are so good you’ll feel like you are rewarding yourself, even if they are not named after your favorite candy. You can find MIND FK™ in Tropical Punch, Sour Peach, and Blue Raspberry flavors, and they will all mix perfectly in your shaker bottle.

As far as price, you can pick up MIND FK™ for $54.99.

Check out our full review for MIND FK™ here!

Final Thoughts

The integration of nootropics into pre-workout supplements represents a shift towards comprehensive performance enhancement, addressing both physical and cognitive aspects of training. As interest in nootropics continues to grow, more research and innovation are likely to shape the future of pre-workout formulations, catering to athletes and fitness enthusiasts seeking peak performance in the gym and beyond.

Larry Wheels Before & After Photos Showing The Effects Of “Peak Steroid Abuse”

Larry Wheels face before after steroids

Why Larry Wheels switched from steroid usage to TRT

Larry Wheels has opened up about his steroid use, and has shared photos comparing his face during “peak steroid abuse” versus his current condition. Wheels previously made headlines by discussing how he would stop using steroids for improved athletic performance and instead start testosterone replacement therapy, otherwise known as TRT to bring his testosterone levels back to normal. While his journey into this transition has relatively just started – he appears to already be reflecting back to his days of heaviest steroid use.

Larry Wheels has pushed the boundaries of both his physique and strength throughout his career. Having focused in the past in both bodybuilding and powerlifting – Wheels was best known for his monstrous lifts, but certainly has built a large amount of muscle mass. The amount of heavy weight he could secure were, indeed, impressive. But it seems that his decisions along the way have led to an impasse. One that brought him to decide to drop heavy steroid use altogether.

Why is Larry Wheels Stopping Steroids?

This decision came after enduring many injuries in an attempt to push himself even further – and perhaps by overestimating how fast he can push progress while using PEDs. Wheels now wants to slow things down, focus on his health, and return to what he truly loved about weightlifting – the work, the progress, and the eventual well-earned achievements.

Along this transition toward his new goals, Larry Wheels has been extremely open and honest with his fans on social media. He spoke openly about his heart health and also about his ultimate decision to slow down with PEDs and focus on TRT, to maintain healthy testosterone levels and stay healthy overall.

Before and After Steroid Usage

And now, Larry Wheels opens up again, looking back at old photos of himself and posting a comparison of what his face looked like during what he called, “peak steroid abuse.” You can see the Instagram post below:

A post shared by Larry (@larrywheels)

“SWIPE to see how peak steroid abuse aged my face. Luckily the effects were reversed. First swipe is current condition.”

– Larry Wheels

One image in the post showcased his current condition, which he claims has improved from the way he looked during his more heavy use of steroids. The second image showcases Wheels at an earlier time. In the image, you can clearly see his face looks different. Some might say older or aged. Others may say “harsher” with sharper lines.

There have long been both anecdotes and studies to show the side effects of steroid use – particularly over the long term. Even proponents of steroids wouldn’t argue against that.

And while these two images are also taken under different conditions (such as how much he weighed, the lighting, the lens of the camera, etc), there’s very little doubt that steroids played a part in the difference in how he appears.

Wrap Up

Larry Wheels continues to chronicle his journey away from steroid abuse and into TRT, showing his health and progress. He’s also shared videos of himself testing his strength only on TRT, and he still is inhumanly strong. We can’t wait to see where he goes from here – and when we can next see him in some form of competitive format again.

Until then, stay tuned to the Generation Iron Fitness Network for more news on all things bodybuilding, fitness, and strength sports.

Top Dietitians Analyze Liver King’s Diet Of Raw Meat & Testicles: “Don’t Do It”

Steroids

Many top dietitians took a look at Liver King’s insane diet that includes raw meat.

Liver King became a social media sensation because of his shredded physique and odd diet plans including raw meats and organs. He has continued to preach his ancestral traits and urges those to follow. Naturally, this has gained the attention of dietitians around the world and they do not seem to agree with his lifestyle.

In November, Derek from More Plates More Dates exposed emails proving that Brian Johnson was indeed on steroids. After the allegations, Johnson made a video where he admitted the truth and apologized for misleading his fans. Since then, he has not slowed down in the gym or moving around spreading his word and his diet plans.

“Don’t do it would be my advice.”

The Daily Mail reported that many dietitians dove into the dangers of eating raw meat and what it could do to the body. Clare Thornton Wood is a registered dietitian for the Association of UK Dietitians. She believes that eating a large amount of live daily is dangerous.

“If you ate too much vitamin C, your body would just excrete it in your urine but if you eat large amounts of liver, it could actually be potentially dangerous.

I don’t disagree that liver is a source of many nutrients but you only need small amounts of those nutrients every day and eating liver every day in large quantities is still dangerous.”

Liver King’s Theories Questioned

Liver King, who’s real name is Brian Johnson, has preached traits that he believes our ancestors followed. This includes eating raw meats and different ways of lift. According to Stanley Ulijaszek, who is a Professor of Human Ecology at the University of Oxford, believes it is impossible to target one specific diet.

“Our ancestors ate many different kinds of diets. To pick on a particularly high meat intake from one particular period in our evolutionary history is misrepresenting the past. We have evolved to eat a diversity of foods, many different things, and we should rejoice in that possibility while always remembering that some foods are healthier than others.”

A post shared by Liver King (@liverking)

Cooking food has raised life expectancy because it eliminates many diseases that can be found in raw food. Aside from the abundance of nutrients that can harm the human body, consuming raw meats can bring upon many different diseases.

“Cooking has extended human life expectancy. We get fewer nasty diseases now.

Vegetables contain a lot of things that we need such as vitamins and minerals but also fiber. These nutrients are absolutely essential for gut health.”

Liver King has made it clear that he is not going to stop preaching his ancestral traits but many professionals around the world do not advise viewers to follow in his footsteps.

Men’s Physique Olympia Champion Ryan Terry Shares Intense Arm Workout While Traveling

Ryan Terry Instagram

Ryan Terry hit a quick, 45-minute arm workout while in Korea.

Ryan Terry reached the top of Men’s Physique during the 2023 Olympia. He has been a threat in the division over the years and was able to win his first Olympia last year. Now, he continues to work toward repeating. Recently, Terry shared a workout while traveling to show his viewers how he is able to stay in shape on a busy schedule.

Ryan Terry has been a constant competitor on the Olympia stage, getting as high as a second-place Men’s Physique finish in 2016 before his victory last year. Last year, Terry qualified by winning the New York Pro.

“A lot of people do ask me, at expos or events, how do you do it while traveling? How do you train and food and all that stuff? Today, I’m going to show you how to do it on a taxed schedule in a short amount of time.”

Terry shared a full arm day while in Korea. He hit a public gym and went through a workout that lasted about 45 minutes.

Ryan Terry Arm Workout

Ryan Terry was in Korea when he hit this workout and wanted to answer how he gets work in while traveling. He answered with a quick session:

Giant Set: GHD Crunches, Preacher Curls, Oblique Crunches, Parallel Bar Dips

Terry explained that with this workout, there would be many supersets due to his time constraint. It began with a giant set of four exercises. Terry also broke down his current split during this time of his prep.

“Arms, I’m trying to bring up now so I’ve incorporated a second arm day. My split looks like this: Back and biceps on Monday, chest and triceps on Tuesday, legs on Wednesday, shoulders and calves on Thursday, Friday back on its own. Arms, biceps and triceps, on Saturday. Sunday is more of a rested-active day with core.”

Ryan Terry hit another arm superset that focused on bicep and triceps.

“When I go into prep, I incorporate core work more in the morning, fasted, three or four times a week.”

Superset: Weighted Crunches & Oblique Crunches

The final superset of the day was two different types of crunches. Terry spoke on oblique crunches and admitted that this is an exercise that he does not hit much.

“It’s something I don’t advocate all the time. This is something I would do every third or fourth week. Early on in my career, I basically did a lot of crunches to widen my lower oblique. That was the only thing where I could pinpoint how I grew them. Now, the only thing I do on obliques is twisting, wood chops or rotating twists.”
